Using a Laptop Cooling Stand with my 2020 M1 MacBook Air – Will It Work?!
The new 2020 M1 MacBook Air does not have a fan, and it can get quite hot if you’re rendering, 3D modelling, or gaming. Laptop cooling stands and pads have been around for a long time now, and they have a proven track record.
In this video, I take two of the most popular laptop cooling stands from Amazon and put them to test. I did multiple renders on programs such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe After Effects, Blender, and Premiere Pro. I also tested if the cooling pads had any effect on idle temperatures.
I found as a result of my testing that the cooling stands did not have a significant impact on the thermals and temperature of the MacBook Air. The heat sink and chassis of the Air is designed very well, so even if the fans are at 100% on the cooling pad, the internal CPU and component temperature of the Air was reduced only slightly.
However, I recommend that if you are doing a lot of rendering or gaming where the M1 chip and CPU or GPU cores are getting very hot, or you live in a hot and humid environment without much airflow, it might be a good investment.
